The Trademark Process in Foreign Countries
A trademark registered in the U.S. usually doesn’t provide the owner rights or protection in any other country. For those who are seeking registration in a foreign country, The Trademark Group offers the advantage of our proprietary network of trademark professionals in 120 countries around the world. These associates handle the international registration of our clients’ marks.
International Registration
Generally, you must register a mark in each country you plan to use it. However, there are exceptions.
European Community Trademark Registration (CTM) – The CTM protects a mark across all countries that are members of the European Union (EU). Currently, there are twenty-seven EU members.
Madrid Protocol International Registration – The Madrid Protocol offers protection through a single application in designated member countries, currently at seventy-two.
Watch Program
An international watch service can identify marks published in over 200 countries. Marks which sound or appear significantly similar to the subject mark, along with foreign marks equivalent in meaning are reported on a weekly basis. Our search specialists analyze the reports and notify clients of potentially conflicting marks on a monthly basis.
